It is understandable how many have concluded that the years 800 to 814 exhibited military failure, shattering the hopes and ambitions for the new empire. However understandable, it is not an accurate conclusion. Firstly, failure ‘is hardly the corollary of lack of expansion’ and one cannot claim that militarily the period was a failure because of the absence of organised offensive wars of conquest. The fourteen years following Charlemagne’s coronation instead witnessed, not chronographs, but the military consolidation of the empire. Between 802 and 804 the last pockets of Saxon resistance were extinguished and Saxony united with the Frankish monarchy in the Treaty of Salz of 803. The accusation that there was no military expansion during the fourteen years is quite correct, however that is not a military failing and the period instead saw the securing of the empire. Concerning the allegation of border threats, King responds superiorly; ‘how could this be otherwise, given such vast dominions?’ One cannot pursue a theory of military failure as an aspect of failed ambitions in the period in question as there was military success, simply of a different sort.
There are many ways in which modern science has improved our lives and one of them is definitely the lighting technology. Ever since the days when man first created fire and found out how to make torches, the life of humans changed dramatically because now they could also live by night without fearing that they will be eaten in the dark (or later on, that they won’t bump their little toe on pieces of furniture in the black of night). The light source has improved over the eons. From the first torches and candles to the oil lamps that preceded the introduction of the incandescent electric light bulb, man has been improving his light sources so that they can be safer, shed more light and more recently, spend less energy. The incandescent light bulb has been one of the longest used electricity related technologies in the world even though its shortcomings were well documented and are now known even by the sparrows on the branches. These light bulbs are known to produce significantly more heat than light and this is why the European Union, the United States and many other countries from every other continent have been fazing them out and replacing them with compact fluorescent bulbs. But an even more efficient technology has been introduced to the market in the form of LED GU10 light bulbs. LED GU10 is a technology based on the same principle that runs our LED monitors, only now it has a strong enough light to be used for lighting purposes.
Canadian hardcore rockers Cancer Bats are have (finally!) given us a glimpse of what's to come next on their Vimeo. The Toronto, Ontario boys posted a minute long teaser trailer for their upcoming album 'Dead Set On Living' which is set to be released in April 2012. The album will be their fourth studio full-length, following the huge success of 2010's 'Bears, Mayors, Scraps and Bones' and will likely coincide with more international tours. I saw Cancer Bats a couple of times in 2010 and a few more in 2009 and they're an absolutely fantastic band to see live. It was a live performance of theirs that got me first into them a long while back. I saw them at a show and was really impressed by their energy and the music really hooked me, it was literally love at first sight! I immediately downloaded the albums they had out at the time - 'Birthing The Giant' and 'Hail Destroyer' and played them off my r4 card over and over ever since!
The police fear that crime rates are going to sky rocket this Christmas following the riots. The police are prepared for a steep increase in robberies, rather worrying! In the UK, the cities which account for 65% of firearm homicides are London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Liverpool. Glasgow however, is the true home of gangs in the UK, having 6 times as many teenage gangs as London does though London has ten times the population! At the beginning of the 20th century, the cities of Bradford, Leeds, Bristol, and Nottingham all commanded the headlines with stories pertaining to street gangs. Sheffield also commanded many headlines due to the city’s long history of gangs. 118 arrests were carried out in a major offensive against gun crime by gangs in Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, and London on November 28th 2007. Over 1,000 police officers were involved in raids that were carried out against not just gun crime, but drugs, prostitution and other crimes. Britain’s street gangs are increasingly becoming a cultural transmission of America’s Crips and Bloods, obvious in their hand signs and graffiti tags. Use your Duvet and Pillow Warehouse discount codes to escape gang culture!
